Langkawi

Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands, they are part of the state of Kedah, Malaysia.

Langkawi is a versatile holiday destination with world-class infrastructure and facilities: it has modern international airport, excellent roads, marinas, budget hotels, luxurious resorts, superb golf courses and a host of recreational activities.

The name Langkawi is a combination of “Lang” and “Kawi”. “Lang” comes from the local native Malay word helang which means eagle and Kawi means red. In the past, the land was a home to innumerable red-eagles (helang Kawi). A large prominent statue of an eagle situated at the Eagle Square is a popular landmark in Langkawi.

Another tourist spot in Langkawi is the Mangrove forest. The entire Mangrove forest can be covered on a boat ride for about one hour. There is an eagle feeding spot amdist the backwaters where people used to feed the eagles. Thailand can be seen from these backwaters.

Beaches

Langkawi’s idyllic beaches are perfect setting for a fun-filled vacation. Tanjung Rhu Beach, 22 km north of Kuah, is fringed by casuarinas from which the beach gets its name. A perfect place for a picnic, this wide sandy beach offers unmatched pristine tranquility. The sunset at Tanjung Rhu is a spectacular sight.

On the western coastline of Langkawi, lie the beaches of Datai, Kok, Burau Bay and Tengah. You can enjoy a round of gold at Datai Bay’s 18-hole course. Those who wish to spend their day at Burau Bay can enjoy a horseback riding, while visitors to Tengah beach can hire a boat and go island hopping.

Cenang beach is only 3km from Langkawi International Airport and is the most developed of the beach areas housing several luxury class hotels and dozens of budget chalets and restaurants.

Not exactly a dive destination for me as I cannot find any site clear enough to do a dive. I have tried diving at the (recently sunk) Pulau Tuba jetty back in 2004 but visibility was like 1-2 meters. A swell destination for shoppers although not everything’s as cheap as one would expect.

For nice “nasi lauk” lunch, head for Siti Fatimah, located along the road from Kuah/Kedawang towards Ulu Melaka (where Mahsuri’s tomb is located) but please make sure you do not need to use a toilet. They have an array of dishes that are sure to drive your cholesterol level up without you complaining.

One of the best Mee Hoon Sup Utara I have ever tasted is actually located off the beaten path: at Kampung Bagan Pasir on Pulau Dayang Bunting. The stall is located next to the kampung’s mosque.

To go diving, head for Koh Lipe, north of Langkawi…but do bring your passport.

    Hi,

Perfect holiday destination with beautiful beaches and affordable accomodation. Go for western coast, clean water, friendly locals and great seafood!

Accomodation can be difficult to find if you go during peak season, so plan ahead.

Very popular destination, although in my opinion, Perhentian and Redang islands are better in terms of beach quality and water clarity. But in terms of accommodation, Langkawi is an island with the biggest choice - from simple chalets with fans for as little as US$15 per night to 5-star hotels and resorts.

Getting there is easier compared to other Malaysian islands because AirAsia, a budget airline, has many daily flights from Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian Airlines flies there too. To other islands you can’t fly directly, or it’ll cost you more. Like Berjaya-air to Redang or Tioman islands.

Also, being a bigger island than other Malaysian islands, there are more things to do on the island like visiting the geo-park, waterfall, downtown Langkawi, etc. It’s also a free economic zone (i.e. tax-free) that makes a can of beer cheaper than a can of coke. So beer-lovers will enjoy it there.

Langkawi is just awesome. It burns down to more than just the beaches, sceneries and the usual attractions. There’s a certain calmness about the island. Everyone is laid back, relaxed and welcoming. To me, this is paradise.

This will be my 4th year spending my winter holiday on the Island of Langkawi. I rent a lovely 1 bedroom apartment with a back garden gazebo for approx. $400 a month. Plus the island is tax free so my refreshments (beer and wine) are super cheap…..less than I pay in American, my home, or China, where I work. I love to rent a motorbike and hit the remote, beautiful beaches on the island. I also find the locals to be very friendly and welcoming to island guests.
