Redang Island

Redang Island, locally known as Pulau Redang or just “Redang” is one of the largest islands off the east coast of Malaysia. Redang is one of nine islands, which form a marine park. It’s popular for snorkeling and diving activities.

Redang has one of the best beaches in Malaysia and one of the clearest waters.

How to Get There?

  • by Air

    • Kuala Lumpur - Redang Island (approx 1.15 min)
Berjaya Air operates daily direct flights to Redang from the Subang Airport in KL and Seletar Airport in Singapore.
  • by Land and Sea
    • Kuala Lumpur - Kuala Terengganu (by Bus, approx 6 hours)
    • Merang or Shahbandar Jetty - Redang Island (by Ferry, approx 45 min or 2 hours respectively)
Merang shouldn’t be confused with Marang which is another small town. Depending to which resort on the island you are going, the ferries go from different jetties. Usually bigger resorts have their own ferries stationed in the jetty.

I have visited many islands of Malaysia but Redang was the best. I stayed there with my family for 3 nights and 4 days. The water was really clean and the beaches were great.

I rated Ease of Reach 4-Stars because the ferries go only twice a day from Merang Jetty. So, you need to plan accordingly, otherwise you will have to wait few hours or even stay in Kuala Terengganu for a night if you miss the afternoon ferry (which is at 3pm i think).

P.S Don’t forget to get some pills for seasickness if you cannot handle 2 hours ferry ride. I learned my lesson when going to Redang, luckily I got some pills at the store on the island when coming back.

Visited this island few times for the past 10 years. Still feel that this is one of the best island in Malaysia. Highly recommended for those love snorkeling.

this is my first time to redang and i was so astonished by the view.. it was so remarkable. clean air, crystal clear water, everything is so amazing. the chalets are very affordable too, especially when you’re a budget traveler.

however, i do not know how to swim, making snorkeling quite a challenging experience. if you are afraid to go and see the coral in the deeper area of the sea, there are a few spots provided for beginners just at the shore. even there, you can see lots kinds of fishes.

seasick is a trouble so do be prepared beforehand. the waves are kinda strong so even in a ferry, you’re risky of seasick.

overall, redang is just great and i can’t wait for my next trip!

Redang has ridiculously beautiful beaches. It is the one and only reason to go here. Accommodation varies from basic chalet to higher end hotels. Redang also caters to the package tourist, which of course is fantastic if that is your favorite mode of travel. However independent travelers may find Redang not to their liking for a long stay Eateries are mainly connected to the hotels with the exception of 3 kampung restaurants on the main road from the jetty to Berjaya. Ferries can be either organized through your accommodation or on your own and seem to follow a schedule and either leave from Kuala Besut ( shorter transfer time ) or from the public jetty in KT . They seem to be fairly efficient and run on time. This is a small island and activities center around the beach , diving & snorkeling.

This is my first time in Redang and I’m really love the beaches and corals. The accommodation is quiet good as I’m took the snorkelling package for 3 days 2 nights. I think 3 days in Redang is not enough because there are many things to explore. We’ve no time to visit the village and the redang compound. Will plan to go there again next time:)
